I've been in the business of working while wearing only underwear since 2009. During that time only few Filipinos are working online.

You have to explain every detail of your job to your friends and families. They're curious how you get your salary and stuff.

Going back to my story, I started working as an actor but I got no luck. I learned that looks isn't the only thing I need. And I'm tired of being handsome. So I decided to keep it a secret and work at home.

I've decided to get training courses from TESDA certified training center but the course for Web Design was dissolved due to low number of enrollees. I then start to think like Einstein.

I've heard that there are online courses and opportunities to work at home. During that time the fastest internet speed that I can get in our area is 3G connection from Globe. My speed is around 0.2 Mbps. Which is hell during the present time. But it works. I managed to learn web design and development. I didn't work at home right away after I develop my skill. I work for few months in office somewhere in Ortigas, Pasig to experience and improve my skills in real life.

After getting the juice of knowledge from these companies, I told my self that I can stand on my own. "Matigas na ang buto ko."

Because I'm a website rockstar, there are US Based companies that offer me a job. I grab the opportunities like a pair of boobs and enjoy the life of a remote employee.

And the rest was history.

What You Need to Get Started Working at Home

Working at home is no big difference in working in the office or anywhere. What the employer needs is your skill and your attitude towards work.



This isn't like just sitting in front of a computer and earn money. This is a JOB like what you usually do. The only difference is environment.

To get you started here's the things you need.

• Reliable Internet Connection - I started working at home with 0.2 Mbps so don't tell me you can't work at home because your internet speed is really bad. This speed gave me a lot of headache but I was able to make various website out of it. Faster internet only means more opportunities. My current internet speed today is around 100Mbps, thanks to PLDT Fibr.
• Skills - no skill, no job, no money. If you don't have a skill or too lazy to have one, find a motivation to change your direction. We'll talk more of this later.
• Self Discipline - Working at home includes discipline and time management. There are a lot of temptation at home - tv, bed, cellphone, food, and you're wife. If you're too weak, you won't accomplish a task.
• Working Computer - You don't need to buy high end computer if you're job is only to do research and encoding. Computer specs can be more demanding for graphic designer and specially video editor.
• PayPal Account - You may ask me how do I get my salary. This is the answer. Paypal is the world's standard when it comes to online payment. You need to create an account and link it with your local bank. Setting up an account is free and you only need a Visa or Mastercard ATM or credit card to link it with your bank account. • Working environment - As long as you can focus and use your computer, you're all good. "Pwede din sigawan mga kasama sa bahay kung maingay."
• Patience and Determination - As I said above, working at home is hard. You need patience and determination. But when you succeed you get dollars and fame. haha!
• English Skills - We work with foreigners that's why we really need to be atleast understandable by our clients. You don't have to be very fluet because even native speakers have flaws on their grammar. As long as you can communicate, you're good to go.

Advantages of Working at Home

Working at home can be fun and frustrating sometimes. But most of the time I can feel it's advantages.

• More time for your family - Play with your child or dog on your break time.
• No traffic - I miss the heavy rain while going to work. I also miss the MRT hassle.
• No peer pressure for nigh life - Save money by not going to starbucks and gimikan.
• Tax Free - Patay tayo jan. I still recommend to pay taxes like what I did. I'm a citizen of the Philippines and I pay taxes specially VAT. Taxumo is a great tool to manage taxes for freelancers and online workers.
• OTTD anything - When I'm starting, I'm not capable of buying an airconditioner for my room. I only wear my underwear and six pack abs.
• No annoying boss - Some online opportunities don't have a boss. But if you're a remote employee, you have to deal with your boss via email, chat, or video chat.

Disadvantages of Working at Home

• no easy access to social life - you will miss your ugly friends and officemates.
• no benefits - Anyway, since you're earning enough money. Get a life insurance, health insurance, voluntary SSS, Philhealth, and Pag-Ibig like what I did.
• no free coffee  - You will earn good money. You don't need this, you can buy a starbucks branch.

Warning for Online Jobs Seeker like you...

Online jobs are not easy to get. This is a big business and scammers are all around the internet.

Remember: You can work from home without registration fee. If they ask for money, think twice! You don't have to spend if you have to work for a company. You only pay if you can get something in return. For example: training course, web hosting fee, domain name registration, and other subscriptions.

How much money should I spend?

For beginners, you don't need to spend a large amount of money. I can see forums and seminars that ask for money that ranges from 1,000 pesos to 20,000 pesos. Please avoid this scams. It's too much. If you want to learn something, you can get it for free. There are free courses on YouTube and other websites. But this will take time. All the information you need are scattered. It's like getting every piece of jigsaw puzzle to complete your skill. I would suggest to get premium courses on Udemy.

Where to learn skills for online jobs?

School can't teach you everything you need for a job, even in office works. Getting online jobs will give you the latest technology to land a job.

Reasons for taking online courses vs University Courses and Training Centers

You might think why online courses? I already went to school. It's not enough. Internet technologies are moving forward very fast. You need to update your knowledge continuously. What you know 3 years ago is already obsolete today. Online courses are more updated than school curriculum. It's funny because I enrolled to Informatics on how to make a website but they are teaching table based layout which was done during the 90's. Take note, that was 2oo8.

If you have a degree in college that is related to you interest, that's an advantage. Just update yourself with the latest information.

As I mentioned above, you only need to spend few pesos to buy a legit and high quality online course to develop a skill that you can use to find a job online. Spending more than 1,000 pesos for a seminar is too much for me. A single course in Udemy may only cost you around 760 pesos. Here's what you need to buy online courses in the Philippines.

• Credit Card or Debit Card - If you're an online shopper, you can easily buy courses online. If you're ATM has a Visa or Mastercard logo. You can use it. If you're a student and has no atm or credit card, you can try PayMaya or Eon Card of Unionbank. These are acceptable and you can reload it like a prepaid cellphone in 7/11.
• Internet Connection - All video tutorials are online streaming. Make sure to have a mobile data or wifi.
• Mobile Phone Android/IOS - You can download and watch the videos on your phone. Learn new skill anywhere anytime.

If you're capable of typing fast, this is for you. Being an encoder can be a part time or full-time job but I still suggest to learn higher level skill. For beginners this is recommended. I know a guy who start with being an encoder. While doing this he study how to use Photoshop and learn programming. Now he's a senior web designer in a big company.
• Online Jobs for Students -  If you want to work in an office, most of the companies will ask for your diploma and transcript of records.
